The California State Capitol building was built in 1874. In 1973, this California landmark was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and in 1974, the California Capitol was officially listed as a California Historical Landmark. 

The California State Capitol building is one of the most unique of all California landmarks. This landmark that doubles as our State Capitol has a secret underground room used as a shelter during the Cold War. 

Did you know that on the facade of this remarkable California landmark are mystical characters that hint at California’s story and its identity? That’s right, in Roman mythology, Minerva is the goddess of wisdom, which represents the commitment the state has to education and knowledge. California is the home of some of the world’s most prestigious universities and research centers, proving that innovation and intellectual creativity are high on California’s list of priorities. 

Another interesting fact is that according to Roman mythology, Minerva was born a fully grown adult; this symbolizes California’s immediate rise to becoming a state without first becoming a territory. 

This California landmark in Sacramento has a gold-plated copper ball in its dome, representing California’s Gold Rush. This glorious dome lives high up in the vast sky of Sacramento, while inside is a smaller replica of the original dome, where visitors can see the Victorian-style details.

Capitol Park surrounds the State Capitol and, at one time, was the furever home of a feline named Senator Capitol Kitty. For 13 years, Senator Capitol Kitty lived on the grounds of the California State Capitol. The building employees loved and cared for this beautiful black cat; former First Lady Sharon Davis wrote a children’s book about Senator Kitty entitled “The Adventures of Capitol Kitty: An Almost True Story.” 

Capitol Kitty passed away in 2004. Her resting place is on the grounds near the south entrance of the California State Capitol in Sacramento, where she once lived. RIP, Senator Capitol Kitty.
